The Sex Muscle: Discovering and Strengthening the Pubococcygeus

In the vast and complex realm of human sexuality, a key player frequently goes unnoticed, yet its role is paramount: the pubococcygeus (PC) muscle. As a clinical sexologist, my experience and expertise have led me to appreciate the indispensable function this muscle serves for individuals of all genders. It not only offers crucial support for the pelvic organs but also significantly influences sexual functionality and pleasure. The question then arises: how can we tap into the extraordinary capabilities of what could be termed our “sex muscle” to elevate and enrich our sexual experiences? This exploration is not just about physical wellness but delves into enhancing intimate connections and personal satisfaction.

Training the PC Muscle: The Path to Greater Sexual Fulfillment

The training of the PC muscle is achieved through Kegel exercises, specifically designed for this purpose. Regular practice of, these exercises not only improves the intensity and ease of orgasms for women and contributes to firmer, longer-lasting erections for men but also strengthens the vaginal walls and aids in ejaculation control. Research suggests that a weak pelvic floor can lead to difficulties in maintaining erections. The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in managing blood flow to the genitals, aiding in the erection process by compressing the penile veins and trapping blood in the penis.

Proven Benefits and Advanced Techniques

Testimonies and scientific studies endorse the benefits of these exercises, reporting everything from increased vaginal toning to prolonged erections. Research has highlighted the effectiveness of pelvic floor exercises, specifically Kegel exercises, in treating premature ejaculation (PE), suggesting a significant correlation between a weak PC muscle and premature ejaculation. A groundbreaking trial presented at the European Congress of Urology demonstrated that pelvic floor exercises could effectively treat men with lifelong PE. This study, involving 40 men aged 19-46 who suffered from PE, showed a more than fourfold increase in ejaculation time from an average of 31.7 seconds to 146.2 seconds after a 12-week program of pelvic floor muscle training. Remarkably, 33 of the 40 participants showed significant improvement.

Further supporting this, Kegel exercises have been identified as a beneficial treatment for PE, capable of enhancing sexual stamina, strengthening erections, and improving ejaculation control. The International Journal of Urology highlights the role of pelvic floor rehabilitation in treating PE, emphasizing understanding and controlling the contraction of pelvic muscles concerning sexual arousal and ejaculation. A 2005 study focusing on pelvic floor exercises for erectile dysfunction also found these exercises, alongside lifestyle changes and biofeedback, to be an effective first-line approach for the long-term resolution of erectile dysfunction, hinting at their broad applicability in sexual health. Moreover, advanced techniques such as “Pompoir” allow both genders to actively use the PC muscle during intercourse to heighten mutual pleasure

How to Identify and Exercise Your PC Muscle?

In my practice, I guide my clients on a transformative journey, step by step, beginning with the discovery of their pubococcygeus (PC) muscle. The initial phase of this exploration involves accurately locating the PC muscle, a task achievable by momentarily halting the flow of urine. It’s crucial to emphasize that this technique is solely for the muscle’s identification and should not become a habitual exercise. Once the muscle is pinpointed, I introduce my clients to a meticulously designed regimen that incorporates daily exercises of contraction and relaxation.

This program is tailored to progressively increase the number of repetitions, ensuring a comfortable yet effective strengthening process. The benefits of adhering to this routine extend far beyond physical health. Clients report noticeable enhancements in the firmness of erections and the intensity of orgasms, leading to a profoundly positive impact on their sexual experiences. Moreover, this practice cultivates a deeper sense of confidence and security within intimate relationships. Through this focused and supportive approach, I aim to empower men to harness the full potential of their “sex muscle,” thereby unlocking new dimensions of pleasure and intimacy in their lives.

Kegel exercises specifically target the pubococcygeus muscle, part of the pelvic floor muscles that stretch from the urinary sphincter to the anus. When contracted, these muscles can help delay ejaculation and improve blood flow, thus addressing both PE and erectile dysfunction. Notably, a study published in Therapeutic Advances in Urology evaluated the impact of pelvic floor rehabilitation on lifelong premature ejaculation issues, finding significant improvements in ejaculatory control among participants.

Beyond Exercise: Igniting Sexuality from Within

Sexuality, like a car, needs to be “ignited” to function properly. This ignition is metaphorical of the alignment between our desires and our sexual responsiveness. In this context, Kegel exercises are one tool, but sexual well-being is multifaceted, involving physical, emotional, and mental aspects. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, listening to our desires, and being mindful of our individual needs are essential practices for a satisfying sex life.

The journey toward a fulfilling and satisfying sex life is deeply personal and uniquely tailored to each individual. Within this exploration, strengthening the PC muscle through Kegel exercises emerges as a crucial step, encouraging us to attentively and respectfully engage with our bodies. I mention this process in my book, “Make Love 365 Times a Year,” where I delve into the transformative power of consistent, mindful practices in enhancing sexual wellness. Ultimately, the secret to success on this path lies in our perseverance and adaptability to changes, reinforcing the idea that the true defeat is in yielding to the complexities of our sexuality. Through the insights and strategies shared in the book, readers are invited to discover the enduring rewards of nurturing their sexual health and intimacy every day of the year.
